Living Humane explores the nuances of living in harmony with animals and the environment. Each week, we discuss topics from pet adoption and wildlife protection to animal law and veganism. Living Humane is Seattle’s local animal welfare and compassionate lifestyle program and connects our broad community of advocates, conscientious consumers, pet owners, community leaders, and the humane business community.

About the Host:
Christie Lagally is a freelance writer, columnist and activist. Her passion for writing about the rescue efforts for animals and pets began as child when she discovered the wonderful books of James Herriot — a Yorkshire vet who wrote about his 50+ year career caring for large and small animals before and after WWII.
In 2007, Christie and her husband adopted an old dog from the local animal shelter in Richmond BC, and she began writing a newsletter for the Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS). When she began working for RAPS in 2009, she started writing weekly and bi-weekly pet columns for the Richmond News to educate and inform the public about animal welfare issues.
Later in 2009, Christie began freelance writing about the extraordinary work of so many small, independent rescue groups who care for every animal they can save. Christie also covered stories about groups working to stop cruelty and suffering of animals.
Christie’s on-going advocacy work was fired-up in Richmond when work with local rescue groups confirmed how pet stores sales of animals, puppy mills, backyard breeding and irresponsible pet ownership was directly causing the pet homelessness crisis in Canada and the United States. Christie and her friend Helen Savkovic started the Animal Welfare Advocacy Coalition (AWAC) to coordinate the efforts of local animal rescue groups to end retail puppy sales in Richmond pet stores. The City of Richmond enacted a bylaw to stop retail sales of dogs on May 1, 2011. See details here.
Christie’s published work was featured in the Richmond News from 2009 – 2011. Currently, Christie writes a column called “Among the animals” for the Pacific Publishing Company’s City Living Seattle paper. Her work has recently been published in Northwest Pet Magazine and Northwest Prime Time.
During the day, Christie works as an engineer at a local aerospace company.
