Heide the Christmas goat at the Puget Sound Goat Rescue

Join us on Living Humane tomorrow to learn about goats and elephants and how to treat them right!

Barbara Jamison, founder of the Puget Sound Goat Rescue will be joining us!  Barbara spent many years in rescue work in Colorado, as a humane society volunteer and then as a manager of the  wildlife rehab program for Boulder County in Boulder Colorado. She started Puget Sound Goat Rescue in 2001 after purchasing an eight acre property in Maple Valley.

While Barbara had no prior experience with goats until  2001. A friend who owned a feed store called her about 9 pm on a rainy night. He had just found two goats tied to a tree outside the feed store, so Barbara went down and got them that night.

Barbara found they were really nice goats.   She was already going to auctions to rescue chickens so started hanging around for the large animal part of auction. She quickly realized that a lot  of very nice, tame goats were being sold for meat. Barbara started bidding on them and bringing them home, and a rescue was born.

We’ll also be joined by Alyne Fortgang co-founder of the Seattle-based organization, Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants and Lisa Kane, co-author and Editor of An Elephant in the Room: The Science and Well-Being of Elephants in Captivity.

Alyne Fortgang’s interest in animal welfare began about 15 years ago, and she served on the board of Directors of Pasado’s Safe Haven.  Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants has been working for the past 6 years to secure the retirement of Bamboo, Chai and Watoto (the Woodland Park Zoo elephants) to a sanctuary.

Lisa Kane, is a practicing attorney who began her legal career as counsel to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, specializing in animal health and meat inspection issues. She has written, traveled and spoken on elephant issues since 2002. Lisa presently serves on a panel of elephant welfare experts advising University of Bristol researchers charged with investigating zoo elephant welfare in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
